Bess Truman, wife of President Harry S. Truman, was known for her steadfast discretion and unpretentious style. Indeed, she believed that her responsibility as a wife was to keep her opinions private. That said, as first lady she served as a thoughtful adviser to the president, her wisdom and insight often helping the commander in chief navigate the immense pressures of the job.
